Cascadilla Gorge trail closes temporarily

The Cascadilla Gorge trail between Treman Triangle at Linn Street and College Avenue has been closed temporarily to address a safety issue.

“After a recent hard rain following this summer’s drought, material eroded onto a section of the trail,” said Todd Bittner, Cornell Plantations’ director of natural areas. “We are working to monitor conditions and address the underlying storm water drainage issue.”

The trail will remain closed until steps have been taken to return it to safe walking conditions.

“We hope the trail can reopen soon, because it is enjoyed by so many,” Bittner said. But, he added, depending on the work needed, the trail may remain closed through the winter.

Bittner said walkers and hikers enjoying the autumnal beauty of the local area are encouraged to use other gorges on campus and in the area; see Hikes on Campus; the gorge safety web page, which includes a Cornell gorge trail map and gorge safety video; or see the Visit Ithaca website.
