Students organize biomedical science symposium Aug. 19

A symposium hosted by the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) graduate program will introduce incoming students to the breadth and depth of research at Cornell, offer opportunities for networking across fields and encourage an interdisciplinary research community on campus.

The 15th Annual Biological and Biomedical Sciences and Beyond Symposium will take place in Stocking Hall Aug. 19, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s theme: “Connect, Collaborate, Create.”

The event is organized by students in BBS and the graduate fields of genetics, genomics and development, and biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology. It is open to the Cornell research community.

“The symposium is an opportunity for students to showcase their research to a broad scientific audience,” said organizer Divya Shiroor, a second-year doctoral student in comparative biomedical sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine. “It is a platform that promotes the diverse research at Cornell and highlights the strengths of a multidisciplinary community that extends beyond the vet school.”

In addition to scientific exchange, the symposium will also emphasize various resources available to students to empower them to pursue a career of their choice, she said.

The symposium will offer faculty and graduate student research presentations, poster sessions with 3-minute thesis presentations, and a breakfast with breakout sessions to meet graduate students who are pursuing entrepreneurship or managing clubs involved in consulting, science policy and science communication, and to gain tips for navigating the first year of graduate school, for example.

Tobias Meyer, the Mrs. George A. Winzer Professor in Cell Biology at Stanford University, will give the Douglas McGregor Keynote Research Lecture, “Molecular choreography of the sequential events that drive cell cycle entry and exit,” in the Pepsico Auditorium in Stocking Hall at 3:30 p.m.
