Cornell History: Newspaper mogul born
October 26, 1894
John Knight, Class of 1918, is born. Leaving Cornell early to enlist in the Army, Knight later became a noted newspaper publisher and editor, creating the Knight-Ridder publishing empire. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his editorial writing in 1968, and by the time of his death in 1981, his company owned 32 newspapers and four television stations and had accumulated 26 Pulitzer Prizes. His generosity helped create Cornell’s Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines.
